The X-Files – The Event Series Blu-ray

Review by David Paul Hellings

“Almost 14 years after the original series run, the next mind-bending chapter of “The X-Files”™ is a thrilling, six-episode event series from creator/executive producer Chris Carter, with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reinhabiting their roles as iconic FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Mitch Pileggi also returns as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner, Mulder and Scully’s boss, who walks a fine line between loyalty to these investigators and accountability to his superiors. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy®- and Golden Globe® Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history”.

After so long away, the question was would a re-opening of “The X-Files” work? The Television graveyard is filled with programmes that attempted a comeback only to fall in the first round. Too many also damaged past reputations by trying once more when their gloves should have stayed well and truly hung up. Would “The X-Files” succeed or fail? Would David Duchovny, laid back as always, want to take time off touring with his band or shooting hoops with his friends? Would now award winning Gillian Anderson want to take time away from stage, screen and other TV projects? Would the chemistry still deliver?

The answers were all good. Age has not withered any of them or the series as it returned in a six-episode “event”. A mixture of mythology episodes, comedic episodes, monster of the week episodes, it’s a reduced length version of an entire series as though they’re testing the waters of modern interest.

Reuniting cast, writers and directors was the smartest move, as opposed to bringing in people that the network might have thought were ‘fresh’, ‘hip’, or whatever the latest buzzword of the week was that week. This is a series in safe hands in every way.

“My Struggle” and “My Struggle II”, the first and last episodes of the series, are written and directed by original series creator Chris Carter, focusing on what is both an extension of and revision of the mythology of the classic storylines. “Founder’s Mutation”, written and directed by James Wong is an excellent monster of the week episode; Darin Morgan’s superb “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster” is a hilarious episode and in the vein of Morgan’s classic “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space”, has a first rate performance by Rhys Darby, and sees Duchovny and Anderson in fine comedic form; Glen Morgan’s “Home Again” is a dark and moving monster of the week episode and also allows social comment; while Carter’s “Babylon” allows our agent duo to meet younger variants of themselves in Agents Miller and Einstein (Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell). It also has Mulder on mushrooms going to a rodeo bar and having a dream scene with the Cigarette Smoking Man – the always quality William B Davis – and encounter the Lone Gunmen. It’s as though there was a no-filter agreement for the creation of the Event series, and it’s all the merrier for that decision.

The cliffhanger conclusion to the Event is in tone with the original series, but it leaves you wanting more. More than six episodes this time, and a decision for the future as to whether there will be another series or even another event would be just fine, we deserve it.

“The X-Files” – The Event Series – is a delight. The leads are superb and are better than ever together; Anderson especially. Any doubts that it was still a relevant series have been washed away and real fans have a lot to love in these six episodes. More please. More please very soon. The files are open and there is still much to discover.

The Blu ray release is excellent, as are the special features which are more than expected for a six-episode series, making this all in all a must buy for fans.
